Character Information History: Phillip J. "Phil" Coulson was born in Manitowoc, Wisconsin on July 8th, 1964 to Robert and Julie Coulson. His father worked as a History teacher at the local highschool, as well as coaching the football team.
Growing up, Coulson wished for siblings, and resented his father for insisting they work on repairing an old Corvette together rather than letting him play with his friends. When Coulson was 9, on September 22, 1973, his father died/was killed, an event Coulson would later describe as the defining moment of his life. It plays a huge part in his attachment to his car as an adult, which he named Lola.
Following highschool Phil went to college to follow in his father's footsteps, studying History. However, as Phil studied he wound up investigating and discovering things that were meant to be hidden, discovering the origins of SHIELD and other things of note enough to attract the attention of Nick Fury. Fury swooped in and recruited Phil into the Academy of Operations.
Following graduation Phil became a special agent under his S.O. Nick Fury. He rose through the ranks over the years, and his obsession with heroes like Captain America led him to continually be involved in assignments that other agents may have found too far fetched to be worth much time.
By the time Phil was 28 he lost his mother, leaving SHIELD to be his only real family. He threw himself into his work, and rarely taking time outside of it to make any friends in the real world.
He was tasked with keeping tabs on Stark once Iron Man made his appearance in the world, and following that the rest of what would become the Avengers slowly made their appearances in the world. None to the greater excitement of Phil than Captain America, miraculously alive despite decades in the ice. The Avengers assembled to take down Loki, and Phil met his untimely end.
That would have been the end of his story, if not for project TAHITI. Originally, Phil had been in charge of the project, vetting or disapproving of the experimental procedure. It was met to revive a fallen Avenger. Taken from the fluids of a deceased alien, the substance was tested on terminally ill SHIELD agents who volunteered for another shot at life. At first it seemed to work perfectly, but eventually all of the volunteers began to suffer delusions, and visions, drawing strange symbols, and acting out violently. Coulson resigned from the project, advising that Fury never subject a person to it. The agents had their minds rewritten in the hopes of their being able to live normal lives.
"To be clear, I’m recommending the termination of Project T.A.H.I.T.I. Under no circumstances should these procedures or drugs be administered to anyone ever. The cost is far too great."
Unknown to Coulson the project was not shut down, and following his death he was secretly brought to the Guest House and administered the drugs. After more than seven surgeries he was brought kicking and screaming back into the world, pleading to die, and to try and save his sanity his mind was rewritten. They gave him memories of only have been 'clinically dead' for as much as 8 minutes before being revived by the med team. And from there he was sent to Tahiti to recover. A beautiful, relaxing vacation. A magical place.
